Soil health is the capacity of soil to function as a crucial living system, within an ecosystem, to sustain animal and plant productivity, maintain or enhance air and water quality, and promote animal and plant health/growth. Healthy soil is the foundation of sustainable agriculture and maintaining soil health is important for both agricultural and environmental needs, such as reducing erosion, optimizing crop production by improving nutrient cycling, protection from runoff from nearby industries and leaching by surplus fertilizers and diagnosing plant health.
